Here is the one thing that surprises first-time visitors to Cam Ranh Airport (CXR): it is not in Nha Trang. The city most people are heading for is 35 to 40 km north, a 45 to 60 minute drive, while the big beach resorts along Bãi Dài (Long Beach) sit right next to the airport, barely 15 minutes away. So your best way in depends entirely on where you sleep. For a resort by the airport, a quick taxi or transfer is all you need; for Nha Trang city, choose between a cheap shuttle bus, a metered taxi, a Grab ride or a pre-booked transfer. Carry some Vietnamese dong for the first ride. Here is how each option works.
Where are you actually going?
Sorting this out before you land saves money and confusion, because the resort strip and the city pull in opposite directions from the terminal.
| From the airport to | Approx. drive | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Bãi Dài / Long Beach resorts | ~15 min | Resort stays right by the airport |
| Nha Trang city centre | ~45–60 min | The main beach city, tours, nightlife |
| Cam Ranh town | ~15–20 min | Local stays, quieter coast |
| Da Lat (highlands) | ~2.5–3 hr | Cooler mountain trips |
Your options into Nha Trang
For the city, you have four sensible ways to travel. Price climbs as convenience does, but none of them is expensive by Western standards.
| Option | Best for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Grab (ride-hailing) | Transparent, app-set pricing | Book in the app; needs data or airport WiFi |
| Taxi | Door to door, no app | Use the meter or agree the fare first |
| Airport shuttle bus | Budget travel to the city | Cheapest; about an hour; less handy for resorts |
| Private / resort transfer | Pre-booked ease, groups, families | Many resorts arrange it, especially near Bãi Dài |
Grab and taxis
Vietnam runs on Grab, the ride-hailing app, and most travellers find it the easiest call: you see the price before you accept, there is no haggling, and a driver comes to you. The catch is that you need mobile data or the airport WiFi to book, so a local SIM or eSIM picked up on arrival pays for itself fast. A regular taxi from the rank works too; ask for the meter or agree a price before you set off, and have small dong notes ready. Either way the city run is long enough that you will want air conditioning, which both provide.
Shuttle bus and pre-booked transfers
The airport shuttle bus is the budget route into Nha Trang, taking about an hour and dropping near the centre for a small fare. It is great value if you are travelling light and staying in town, but less useful if your hotel is out along the beach. For zero hassle, especially with a family or after a long-haul flight, a private transfer puts a named driver at arrivals. If you are staying at a Bãi Dài resort, ask about a resort transfer first, since the hop is short and many properties handle it for you.
First-timer tips
A little prep smooths the landing. Pick up some Vietnamese dong at the airport for the bus or a taxi, even if you plan to use Grab. Sort mobile data early, because Grab, maps and translation all lean on it. Double-check whether your hotel is in the city or out by the airport, since that one fact decides your transport and your budget. And do not over-pack the first day: settle in, get your bearings, then plan island tours and trips. When you are ready, our guide to things to do in Nha Trang covers the beaches, islands and day trips, including the cooler route up to Da Lat.
